I continue to fall deeper and deeper into love with Hans Bellmer…

William Basinski: D|P 1.1

Set here to a static shot (taken from Basinski’s Brooklyn rooftop) of harrowing black smoke still pouring off of the Manhattan skyline during the final hour of daylight on September 11th, 2001, the first of Basinski’s Disintegration Loops is… almost certainly my favorite piece of neo-classical ambient music.

As the story goes, Basinski was attempting to salvage some of his analog recordings, tape loops he’d made during the early 80’s, by archiving them to a digital format. The magnetic tape was in such bad condition, however, that it began to physically deteriorate—literally disintegrate—as he transferred it. The resulting digital recordings are repeating loops that, as they progress (the ferrite detaching from its plastic backing, leaving bare spots on the tape and silence in those sections), crumble into nothingness.

“Creepy/Beautiful” is quickly becoming the theme of this blog. I’m… working through some stuff.

“That swimmin’ hole in Verplanck, NY where you can swim through the skeletons of broken buildings…”

“…50-foot cliffs and remarkably clear turquoise water 300 feet deep just down from the Indian Point nuclear plant. Pristine spring water below, two 345,000-volt transmission lines above, it’s both natural wonder and industrial ruin, in the world and utterly outside it.”

“The quarry was once one of dozens near the industrial-era Hudson, in a town that made bricks, and where the old Knickerbocker Ice Company before the age of refrigeration sent 45,000 tons of ice each winter down the river to New York City. But in 1943, workers first hit water instead of rock, in the form of a gushing clear underground stream that immediately began to flood the site. To this day, the quarry buildings survive as watery ruins.”

Yohji Yamamoto asymmetrical dress, vintage boots and jewelry, Patrizia Pepe jacket/vest dealidoo (it was like, MELTED on the surface to create that amazing texture), and the Rick Owens glove made from leather and HUMAN HAIR. UUH, so cool.

The Fall’s 1988 album, I Am Kurious Oranj was written as the soundtrack for the ballet “I am Curious, Orange”, produced by contemporary dance group Michael Clark & Company. This footage absolutely destroys me.
