This is the most mesmerizing thing—an excerpt of “The Butterflydance” from Farfale (1907) by the Italian film company Cinès. The film itself, which, DUH, was black and white, was laboriously hand-tinted frame by individual frame. The colorization process was supposedly first employed in an attempt to recreate Loïe Fuller’s live stage performances, which were acclaimed for their early use of chromatic theatrical lights that illuminated the dancer’s flowing, white diaphanous costumes. Somehow I doubt practical effects and lighting techniques achieved the same psychedelic effect seen here. Keep in mind that LSD had not yet been synthesized when some weirdo sat down with a bunch of stencils and dyes and went to town on this footage.

Louis Wain was an artist popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s for his drawings and paintings of cats. It… was a different time. This psychedelic abstraction is presumably symptomatic of his severe schizophrenia, as his pre-diagnosis cat renderings tended to look more like this. Some folks speculate that the onset of Wain’s schizophrenia was precipitated by toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection that can be contracted from cats. Isn’t it ironic. Don’thcha think?

From what I gather, Nicolas Malinowsky is a graphic designer for Ill-Studio, a Parisian branding/graphics/design agency. Sorry to see that what used to be the French artist’s website (http://www.nicolasmalinowsky.com) is now a Japanese real estate tax site? I translated it to make sure it wasn’t some kind of… conceptual art piece. Which would be sort of brilliant? An excerpt:
